The Fifteenth Air Force was established on 1 November 1943 as part of the United States Army Air Forces in the Mediterranean as a strategic air force and began combat operations the day after its establishment.
Operating mainly from bases in southern Italy, it was used for the strategic air offensive on Axis-occupied Europe and Germany.
The fifteenth was disbanded in Italy on September 15, 1945.
